Holistic mental health treatment

Whole-person mental health care, treating mind and body together.

What it means

Holistic mental health, explained

Holistic mental health treatment cares for the whole person, mind, body and life, instead of managing symptoms in isolation. At Sphosh Health, Dr. Koichi Tanji, ND, LMHC connects your biology, nutrition, sleep, stress and lifestyle to how you feel, blending conventional psychiatric care with naturopathic, root-cause medicine.

  • Anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep and chronic stress
  • Care that treats the root cause, not just symptoms
  • Nutrition, labs, therapy and lifestyle combined
  • Medication only when it truly helps

What holistic mental health care means

Holistic mental health care treats the whole person rather than a list of symptoms. It recognizes that how you feel is shaped by your thoughts and relationships, by your body’s physiology, and by the way you live: how you sleep, eat, move, work, rest and connect with other people. When those pieces are assessed together, patterns become visible that are easy to miss when each is handled by a different professional in a different building.

At Sphosh Health, holistic care is not a rejection of conventional treatment. Evidence-based psychotherapy and, when helpful, medication remain central. What changes is the frame around them: we look for the drivers underneath your symptoms and build one plan that addresses them.

The five areas we look at

1. Mind: thoughts, emotions and history

We take a careful psychological history, including past experiences, current stressors, patterns of thinking and coping, and what you have already tried. Therapy is matched to what you need, whether that is skills for managing anxiety, support through grief or change, or deeper work on long-standing patterns.

2. Body: physiology and medical factors

Thyroid function, iron and vitamin levels, blood sugar, hormones, inflammation, pain and medications can all affect mood, anxiety, energy and focus. Where it adds useful information we recommend targeted lab testing. See also thyroid and mental health and inflammation and depression.

3. Sleep and rhythm

Sleep is one of the strongest levers in mental health. Short or broken sleep amplifies anxiety, lowers mood and makes concentration harder, and many mental health conditions disrupt sleep in turn. We treat sleep directly, starting with behavioral approaches. See sleep and insomnia.

4. Nutrition and the gut

Diet quality, meal timing, caffeine and alcohol, and digestive health all influence how the brain functions. See nutritional psychiatry and gut-brain and digestive health.

5. Life context

Work, caregiving, finances, relationships, culture and community shape both stress and recovery. A plan that ignores them rarely holds. We build care that fits your actual life, including schedules, budgets and family responsibilities.

What holistic treatment can include

  • Psychotherapy with licensed clinicians, using approaches suited to your goals.
  • Nervous-system regulation, including breathwork, relaxation training and biofeedback for stress and burnout.
  • Sleep treatment, with behavioral strategies first.
  • Nutrition changes that are realistic and sustainable.
  • Targeted supplements where there is a clear reason, checked for interactions.
  • Medication management when medication is the right tool, including reviews of existing regimens and careful tapering when appropriate.
  • Movement and daylight, adapted to your fitness and the realities of Pacific Northwest winters.

Conditions we support with holistic care

We work with adults, teens and children experiencing anxiety and panic, depression and low mood, depression that has not responded fully to treatment, ADHD, burnout, fatigue and brain fog, mood swings and irritability, perinatal and postpartum mood changes, screen dependency, and complex pediatric presentations such as PANS / PANDAS. If you are not sure where you fit, feeling “off” is a perfectly good place to start.

Is holistic mental health care evidence-based?

The core of our approach rests on well-established evidence: psychotherapy, appropriate medication, insomnia treatment, physical activity, and correcting nutrient deficiencies and thyroid problems. Some newer areas, such as the links between inflammation, the gut microbiome and mood, are promising and still developing. We are open with patients about which parts of a plan are strongly supported and which are reasonable, lower-risk additions, so you can make informed choices.

How holistic care compares with conventional care

In a conventional model, a psychiatric prescriber may see you briefly for medication, a therapist weekly for talk therapy, and a primary care provider once a year for physical health, with little communication between them. Holistic care brings those threads together. Visits are longer, the assessment is broader, and one team is responsible for how the pieces fit. For many people, that coordination is the missing piece. Signs a holistic approach may help you

  • You have tried therapy, medication or both, and you are better but not well.
  • Side effects made a medication hard to continue, and you want to understand your options.
  • You feel exhausted, foggy or wired-but-tired, and no one has looked at why.
  • Your mood shifts with your cycle, after childbirth, or around perimenopause.
  • Digestive problems, headaches or chronic pain travel alongside anxiety or low mood.
  • Your sleep has been poor for months or years.
  • You are a parent noticing changes in your child’s mood, attention or behavior and want a thorough, whole-child assessment.

Holistic care for children, teens and families

Children’s mental health is closely tied to sleep, nutrition, screen habits, school and family stress, and physical health. A child with poor sleep and very selective eating may look anxious or inattentive; a teenager with heavy late-night screen use may look depressed. Our pediatric assessments look at all of these, involve parents in the plan, and coordinate with pediatricians and schools where helpful. See ADHD and autism support, focus and motivation and screen dependency.

What progress looks like

We agree on concrete goals at the start, such as sleeping through most nights, fewer panic episodes, or getting through a workday without a crash, and we track them with standardized questionnaires and simple daily measures. Some changes show up within weeks; others take a few months. If part of the plan is not helping, we change it rather than piling on more.

Your first steps

  1. Book a first appointment online or by phone. We will ask briefly about what brings you in.
  2. Complete a comprehensive intake. Most patients begin with our Biopsych Assessment, which covers history, symptoms, sleep, diet, medications and goals.
  3. Review your plan. We explain what we found, what we recommend, and why.
  4. Follow up and adjust. Visits are more frequent early on and spaced out as you stabilize.

Care is led by Dr. Koichi Tanji, ND, LMHC, who is dual-licensed in Washington as a naturopathic physician and a mental health counselor, together with our team of naturopathic physicians. Our providers can prescribe many medications; controlled substances such as ADHD stimulants and benzodiazepines are outside naturopathic prescribing scope in Washington, so when those are part of a plan we coordinate with your prescriber.
